Two Adorable Newborn Girls

I know it always sounds silly when I say this, but newborn photography is hard work! :) But I love it…especially when I get to “pink” it up! Each of these precious angels was a week old, which is the perfect age for a newborn session.

I have been photographing John and Claire for quite some time, and I’ve really just grown to love their sweet little personalities. I was so happy to see them again this week, and we especially had a great time playing with Claire’s new tea set!

I am almost at the end of my fabulous week in Denver learning from some of the best photographers in the business (Laura Novak and Kimberly Wylie, as well as Carrie Sandoval and Brittany Woodall of Baby as Art ), and I am so very excited about coming home and implementing some of the things I’ve learned this week. Not only are these women amazing artists, but they are also incredible business women who run their studios with the best of the best customer service and efficiency. They have really given me something to aspire to. One of the most important things I have been reminded of while I have been here is just how important it is to remember that what I am doing every day is creating art for the families with whom I work. My biggest goal as a photographer has always been to create memories in a beautiful, artistic way for the families I photograph. However, I often find that clients struggle with how to incorporate that art into their homes. I am so excited to share some of the new things I’ve learned this week about how to help you incorporate these artistic memories into your home decor.

I know that I have mentioned earlier on the blog that we will be making a good number of changes to the way we do our business this year. One of the major changes we have made so far this year is having our ALL of our clients come in for ordering consultations. We found that our clients leave happier and get the products that they want in comparison with doing the ordering online. We can help you narrow your decisions and really make the best selections for your home. Another benefit is that you get to touch and feel all of the new products that we are offering (and will be offering!). In the future, I would love to have the opportunity to meet with my clients prior to the session so that we can REALLY customize a session to your specific needs, as well as to your home decor! :)

So, LOTS to think about and digest on the plane ride home tomorrow night! I also wanted to remind everyone about the Matilda Jane show at the studio on Saturday at 10 (see post below). I had so much fun meeting this absolutely adorable family last week. I have found that newborn sessions can sometimes be my most tense sessions, but this session was far from it. Olivia remained relatively happy throughout the whole session (part of this may have to do with the fact that she was just 7 days old), and her older brother was so much fun. I really think he will have a career in show business at some point in his life. He thoroughly entertained everyone while we were waiting on Olivia to eat. Love that kid!! He and Olivia also brought along their great-grandmother, who is the great-grandmother I hope to be (some day). She was absolutely gorgeous and full of life and had taught big brother so many cool “tricks”. I had a hard time narrowing down what to show, but here are a few…

I’ve been complaining lately about how unfair it is that all the boys get such great eyelashes, but yesterday I met a sweet little one year-old girl who will never have to worry about wearing mascara because her eyelashes (and her eyes!) are just incredible. I know I probably said that at least a dozen times to her mom and grandmother during her session. You guys know I’m obsessed with eyes…..again part of being married to an ophthalmologist! :) Not only were her eyes amazing, but so was her sweet smile and precious little attitude! Sometimes one year-olds can be a little temperamental….this one was not!

I should have known when Thomas looked up at me at the beginning of our shoot with this funny little face that we might be in for a long session….and we were.!

Let’s just say he wasn’t quite so sure how he felt about being a supermodel! :) After some rocking, cooing, feeding, burping, patting, swaying, changing, more swaying (you get the picture), he finally gave in and allowed us to get some really beautiful images! Again, I must reiterate my point from my last post that you just never know what to expect when you shoot a newborn. Expect the unexpected, prepare to be in for the long haul, and you will be pleasantly surprised! Welcome to the world, little Thomas!

It was such a delight to meet little Audrey, my second newborn of 2010. I laughed as her sweet mom apologized for Audrey’s “fussiness”. Oh, if she only could be a fly on the wall at my other newborn sessions! When I tell people that newborn sessions are often my most challenging, people often look at me funny, I’m sure thinking, “could she really be serious??”. True, I am not doing the whole “run and shoot” thing that I do with 2 year-olds and making silly noises and singing silly songs. However, newborns have a mind and a timetable of their own, and it can require a lot of work (and TIME!) to make them look so “peaceful”! Audrey did not require nearly as much work as I am used to, and she did great on her own time playing the peaceful newborn role! But a word to the wise for my future newborn clients….bring along your trashy (well, not too trashy!) magazines, your computer, a good book, etc. and know that you may be in for a long session! Trust me, though….it will be worth your time!
